Increasingly hemp, or rather cannabis, is catching the media’s attention on an international scale. This development is driven by its rediscovery and use as a medicine in many countries, and also due to its legalisation for recreational use in some countries.

However, hemp has been traditionally cultivated and a significant part of our diet for thousands of years: it was grown, not only for being a highly nutritious food source, but also a most resilient and resource-saving crop plant.

In recent years, a new consumer behaviour has come to light, led by a more ecologically aware lifestyle in which sustainability is reflected in all aspects of their behaviour. This group is interested in sustainable products, intelligent food solutions and rediscovering lost and indigenous food treasures. The hemp plant fulfils all these wishes: it’s an ecologically sound resource, it can be cultivated without using pesticides and with only little water. The hemp plant is also a nutritional marvel and true all-rounder: a great energy supplier, promotes digestion and boosts the immune system amongst other things. Hemp is increasingly being hyped in current food trends: the so-called superfood trend (foods that are characterised with a high content in valuable nutrients) and plant-based diets, both fuelled by health-seeking and fitness-orientated consumers.
